Yes, Using a super string - Pipe, is a quick and easy way to do it.

Depending what else you are doing, creating a strings, or Trimesh (or Triangulation) may be needed.

If you simply Parallel the edgeline or even an alignment, there is also:

Design -> Apply -> Amend VG [Amend Mode - Extend XFall]

Which you can select 2 strings (say surveyed CL & Edgeline) to extend from to your parallelled string.

An Alignment string would be your best option to use.

Then 'Design' 'Apply' 'Interface' should do what you want, no template req'd.
