USB 3 and Wibu

Post by Blake Gregory »

Intel Sandy Bridge (Current Chipset), and previous chipsets have only USB 2.0 in the chipset.

AMD Bulldozer and Brazos both have USB 3.0 but anything prior to this (Late 2011 for both) only have USB 2.0 in the chipset.

This means, that each manufactorer of a laptop motherboard or any implementation of USB 3.0 uses third party chipsets. This has meant that there are slight variations to how each works (though it should not be the case).

As such, 12d has found in its testing of USB 3 and Wibu drivers, on both its own systems and clients, that its very dependent on the chipset.

Either it will work straight away, or require a workaround such as USB type hub, or wont work at all.

For this reason, USB ports 2.0 or lower are only recommended to be used with USB dongles.

NOTE: Intel Ivy Bridge (due end of month) will have inbuilt USB 3.0 support, and should alleviate all these problems.

The earlier chipsets for Intel and AMD that dont support USB 3.0 Native are:

Intel Core: Conroe, Allendale, Meromm, Kentsfield, Woodcrest, Clovertown, Tigerton, Penryn, Wolfdale, Yorkfield, Harpertown, Dunnington
All Intel Atoms.
And any previous lines (pentium, Celeron etc.)
