Creating Columns

Post by Paul Wood »

What is the quickest way to create columns so that on perspective view, you can clearly see if it is clashing with pipes and services. We have over 2000 columns with similar base levels, and differing finish levels?

put into excel
E N RL (top) XX01 (string name)

copy and paste the above (or use formulas) and change the E or N by 1mm.
Do that for all of the columns

E N RL (top) XX01 E N RL (bottom) XX01
E N RL (top) XX02 E N RL (bottom) XX02
etc

copy and paste your bottom RL'd columns and paste them to the bottom of your first set. Then do a sort by string name and save as a csv.
Read into 12d with xyzs pt id input
Covert model to pipe
Utilites > super string > pipe and set your column size.
or create mapfile to set the pipe using the string name you created above...

Hope that makes sense...

Nice Carl.
But you could skip a few steps.
The points don't need to be in different positions (x,y).
They just need to have the top and bottom Z you want.
1. Convert points to lines (Utilities A - G Change)
2. Join Top and bottom points together (Utilities A - G Head to tail) (2d 0.001 tolerance)
3. Convert to Pipes (Utilities Super strings => Pipe/Culvert) (Centre Justified)
I made a chain that did this for light bases for road lighting but that was using a Tin.

yep no need to move x or y I got my pipes and tinning caught up in my head at the same time.

Of course we are both assuming your columns are circular...
Any other shape you are looking at a much longer process for 2000!

If you have the Visualisation module, you can also use the extrusions to create a column at each vertex. The Roadside furniture option (View->Visualisation->Utilities) has an option to insert a column or post at every vertex along a string.

I use the CAD Text option no text shows up, everything works as normal and I can change size, location and angle of 'text' but no text is actually visable.

Ali, do you have text toggled off for the view?
