Help menu does not load

Post by Jonathan Williams »

Hello

I have installed windows 7 driver for 64bit but still when I hit any help button inside 12D nothing happens.

Why does this not work.

Works on another machine in the office but not on mine or one other.

Tried changing or coping env file and downloading windows 7
Windows6.1-KB917607-x64.msu file.

Current running latest version 10 C1m

Any help much appreciated.

Windows 7 does not read the old hlp file format that 12D V10 uses - you need to install a Windows patch:

Also if you open your current version of 12d v10 c1m you will see this under Help => Microsoft 7 which has links to the help download along with the reasoning of why it's not shipped with 12d.

Sorry, misinterpreted what you meant by "windows 7 driver", and the microsoft link does not give a clue as to the filename you mentioned... silly question, but are you using Windows 7 or 8?

Hello

Can't paste screen shot into message body or attach a file.

BUT message reads

Cannot display this help file. Try opening the help file again, and if you
still get this message, copy the help file to a different drive, and try
again.

I did copy 12D help from C: Drive to D: drive but same message.

A few things that might be worth checking:
  • Do you get the same error when trying the 12d Macro Manual (Help->12d Macro Manual)?
  • Does the help viewer exe exist? I believe it should be %WINDIR%\winhlp32.exe, typically C:\Windows\winhlp32.exe
  • If you double-click on that .exe, it should prompt you to select a file to open. Try browsing manually for the 12d.hlp file under Program Files\12d\12dmodel\10.00\Help .

Cheers Matthew

Every thing you have said is correct.

1. It does NOT work using macro manual, same error

2. winhlp32.exe does exist, this is also the file to download.

3. If I double click on exe from 12model\10.00\help YES this works.

So the answer still remains why the menu inside 12D do not work and
get the error message.

Must be something to do with 64bit machine.

On other 64bit machines can get help \ 12d Model to work but error
when you try On help and 12D Macro Manual, these you have to do manually.

Really annoying

Jonathan, the only problem I can reproduce is that "Help on help" indeed does not work. It appears Microsoft do not ship/install the winhlp32.hlp file since Windows Vista.

I can see in the code, that "Help on help" is not supposed to be displayed from Windows Vista and onwards.

All other paths to access help do appear to work. The folder

c:\program files\12d\12dmodel\10.00\Help

should have

12d.hlp
12d.pdf
12d_progm.hlp
12d_progm.pdf
12d_track.chm

Hmmm...got me stumped. :?

Typically, there are 3 ways to call up the help inside 12d Model- F1, Help button or Help menu.

Do all 3 ways have the same effect?
