12d and Garmin Etrex Handheld GPS

Post by Patrick Boot »

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to upload "waypoints" (XYZ data) to a hand held GPS from 12d using a Serial Cable. Further more how to do it.

Some help would be appreciated

Kind Regards

You can't do it from 12d, you need another piece of software. Did you get any other software with your GPS? I use a freeware program called Trackmaker http://www.gpstm.com/ I've never tried uploading waypoints, you'll need to tinker with the format but I think it takes Lat/Long/hgt, but it is excellent for downloading tracks & waypoints, overlaying on maps or you can view your data in GoogleEarth. There is also a professional version which gives you some extra options for file outputs etc.

Hi Bernard,
Thanks for that, I have got it done through Fugawi,
I have used it in the past (although a while ago) so it was somewhat familiar.
I will try GPS Track Maker as it is freeware and sadly Fugawi is not.

It would be a useful addition to 12d to have outputs to handheld GPS' ill suggest it to 12d support

Thanks again.

I may be wrong here but I thought Garmin has a FREE POI loader software
That takes CSV files

12d already has this capability
File I/O =>Data output =>"Write XYZS pt_id"

If you need long and lats simply convert your coordinates in 12d using
Survey =>Conversions =>

You can add these two steps into one chain.

you would have to use Garmin POI Loader to upload it via Serial Cable

Following is from Garmins Website
CSV format

Code: Select all

<Lon>,<Lat>,["]<Name>[@<Alert Speed>]["],["] [comment]["]
Longitude and latitude must appear in WGS84 decimal degrees format (ddd.ddddd; negative numbers indicate West and South).
If you include quotes around the name or comment, you can include line breaks in the text.
The following are examples of Custom POIs in the proper format:
-94.79731,38.81099,Ridgeview@25
-94.74240,38.81952,Heritage Park,Perfect site for a picnic
-94.76416,38.81227,Garmin,"1200 E. 151st Street
Cheers
Sam
